An imaginative book that encourages readers to come up with their own ideas about The Something.

Story

A little boy’s ball disappears into a hole in the garden. But what mysterious creature lives down there? The boy’s imagination is captured and his friends and family offer wild speculations: Could it be a rabbit hole? A troll’s lair? Or maybe even a dragon den?

Why we chose it

A great story to read aloud and for getting children to use their imaginations to decide for themselves what’s in the hole.

Where it came from

Rebecca Cobb is an award-winning illustrator. When she studied arts in Cornwall, she fell in love with the inspiring scenery and still lives there today. She has both worked with other authors and written and illustrated her own books.

Where it went next

The Something was shortlisted for the UKLA 2016 Book Award and longlisted for the 2015 CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal.

Associated stories

Other books by Rebecca Cobb include Aunt Amelia, Lunchtime and Missing Mummy. Others illustrated by Rebecca Cobb include The Paper Dolls and The Everywhere Bear with Julia Donaldson, The Islands, The Lonely Sea Dragon and The Ferry Birds with Helen Dunmore.
