Where it came from
The story probably originated as a Jewish Polish folktale where a rabbi teaches thankfulness for what you have because things can always be worse.
Where it went next
There are a number of picture book versions of the story. The best known is probably A Squash and a Squeeze by Julia Donaldson and Axel Shaffler. Another is The Very Noisy House by Julie Rhodes and Korky Paul.
