Story

Class 5’s school trip is about to get very exciting! Thieves are planning to rob the castle, but when Nas and Bella overhear their plot, ‘The Boss’ swings into action. He’s the smartest boy in the school and he’s organised the class into a crew of super-detectives. Will ‘The Boss’ and class 5 be able to stop the robbery in time?

Why we chose it

A fast paced mystery adventure in comic book form featuring a whole class of young detectives who must solve the crime without attracting the attention of the teachers – a classic children are smarter than the grown-ups plot masterfully executed.

Where it came from

Before being published as a book in 2010, The Boss story was featured in the DFC comic in 2008 written by John Aggs with drawings by his mother Patrice Aggs. John Aggs (1984- ) has a first-class degree in illustration, and won a Tokyopop ‘Rising Stars of Mango’ award in 2007.

Where it went next

The Boss received very positive reviews. It is known as part of the ‘DFC Library’ of books produced as spin-offs from the original comic series which ended in 2009.

Associated stories

John Aggs also wrote and illustrated Robotgirl for the DFC comic in 2008. He has continued to write for comics including Zara’s Crown (writer - 2011) and Zara’s Crown (writer - 2012) for the Phoenix Comic, which followed on from the DFC. Since then has gone on to illustrate for authors such as Philip Pullman (Philip Pullman’s John Blake 2008-9) and Malorie Blackman (Noughts and Crosses graphic novel, 2014), as well as illustrating for graphic novels aimed at adults.
