An immensely successful platform video game where a mustachioed plumber must save the day.
Story
The original Super Mario Bros features the brothers Mario and Luigi who live in the Mushroom Kingdom. They must rescue Princess Toadstool from Bowser, making their way through a series of puzzles and traps set by the Koopa Troopas (Bowser’s minions). Mario and Luigi must free Princess Toadstool as she is the only one with the power to stop Bowser!
Why we chose it
Super Mario Bros began one of the biggest gaming franchises of all time, and since 1985 there have been approximately 33 sequels or remakes of the game (not counting other games in the Mario world such as Mario Kart or Mario Party). The original Super Mario Bros, a pixelated side-scroller is very different from the modern Super Mario games which benefit from advanced graphic and computing systems. However, it remains one of the best selling video games of all time and it’s characters still captivate its players to this day.
Where it came from
Super Mario Bros was created as a successor to the arcade game Mario Bros (1983). Super Mario Bros was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Nintendo’s major video game console to be released in the USA.
Where it went next
Super Mario Bros has had several sequels, remakes and spin-offs. The latest was released in 2019 showing how well the series has endured.
