There once was a baby who lived in a shoe but this baby was so adventurous he went to sea in his shoe and there he met a one-shoed giant and a giantess…. Are these his parents? If not, who are they?

Where it came from

Joyce Dunbar’s first book , Jugg, was illustrated by her husband. It was such a success that she went on to write over 80 children’s books : mostly picture books for younger children. Shoe Baby was one of these and was illustrated by her daughter.

Her Mouse and Mole series, illustrated by James Mayhew has been made into a TV series starring Alan Bennet. Joyce Dunbar became deaf when she was five. Moonbird , illustrated by Jane Ray, is about a deaf prince who is taught by the Moonbird to use his hands and eyes to communicate. A stage production of her book, Moonbird was made in Singapore and then travelled to several other countries.
