A comic strip about an 8 year old girl which makes wry comments on modern society.

Story

Nancy is a short comic strip following the life of a typical, mischievous 8 year old girl in America. She lives with her aunt Fritzi Ritz and her best friend is a boy called Sluggo. These three block comic strips often make funny comments on modern life.

Why we chose it

A popular comic strip in the 1930s, Nancy was updated for the 21st century in 2018, introducing modern themes and new characters whilst maintaining the wry humour and minimalist style.

Where it came from

Nancy’s character first featured in the comic strip Fritzi Ritz about the life of a flapper. Bushmillar said Nancy was meant to be a minor character who featured only briefly but she soon became the main feature of the strip and it was renamed in 1938.

Where it went next

At its peak in the 1970s Nancy ran in more than 880 newspapers.

Over the years the character of Nancy has been drawn by many people but currently she is drawn by Olivia Jaimes, the strip’s first female writer. Olivia Jaimes has updated the technology in Nancy often showing the characters with smart phones and commenting on social media.
