Introducing Mog, a much loved, though frequently troublesome, cat.

Story

Mog lives with the Thomas family and causes all sorts of bother -sitting in the flowerbeds, squashing Mrs Thomas’ hat, eating Nicky’s egg and waking up Debbie in the middle of the night. One night a burglar breaks into the house. Can Mog save the day?

Why we chose it

A classic picture book by a much loved author and illustrator. Mog went on to star in a number of further adventures, becoming one of the most popular picture book cats.

Where it came from

Judith Kerr started writing children’s books after telling stories to her own children. Her stories about a tiger became The Tiger Who Came to Tea. Mog the Forgetful Cat was her second book to be published.

Where it went next

A whole series of books featuring Mog’s adventures with the Thomas family followed.

In 2015 Mog featured in a Christmas advert for Sainsbury’s – all profits from sale of the associated book and toy went to Save the Children’s child literacy projects.

In February 2020 Mog went on tour of the UK visiting bookshops to celebrate the 50th anniversary of publication of Mog the Forgetful Cat.

Associated stories

Other Mog books are Mog’s Christmas (1976), Mog and the Baby (1980), Mog in the Dark (1983), Mog and Me (1984), Mog’s Family of Cats (1985), Mog and Bunny (1988), Mog and the Granny (1995), Mog’s Kittens (1994), Mog and The V.E.T.(1996), Mog’s Bad Thing (2000), Goodbye, Mog (2002) and Mog’s Christmas Calamity.

Judith Kerr wrote a number of other picture books, including The Tiger Who Came To Tea, The Curse of the School Rabbit, When Willy Went to the Wedding, My Henry, The Great Granny Gang and Mister Cleghorn’s Seal.

Judith Kerr won the Booktrust’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016
