Mavis has moved to Barrow with her father after the death of her mother. She doesn't believe in fairy tales but then she meets an old woman who claims to be a mermaid and who asks for her help.

The film was shot in Barrow on the north west coast of England and starred Eric Sykes and Sylvia Syms.
Where it went next
Mavis and the Mermaid won the Kodak Shortfilm Showcase 2000 at the BAFTA awards. It was one of the short films included in the bfi selection of Story Shorts, short films for primary schools, which showed how to use short films as texts to develop literacy.
