Oral tradition Folktale from America
A folktale that demonstrates the power of song.
Story
A little girl disobeys her parents and leaves the garden and goes into the wood to pick flowers for her mother. Sure enough she meets a wolf but she is able to sing him to sleep.
Why we chose it
Little Daughter and the Wolf was one of the stories in our original audio stories collection. These stories are particularly suitable for learning to retell.
Where it came from
Chris Smith, who recorded the story for our audio stories collection, heard it told at the Beyond the Border storytelling festival.
Where it went next
A written version titled The Sweetest Song can be found in Hugh Lupton’s The Story Tree: Stories to Read Aloud.
