Solve clues and complete puzzles to rescue a princess from a monster

Story

Braid is a puzzle platformer that tells the story of Tim trying to rescue a princess from a monster. Clues which are picked up throughout the game give hints to Tim’s thoughts and feelings which are echoed in the gameplay for example there is a mechanic where you can rewind time.

Why we chose it

Braid tells a very simple story on the outside but through the levels of the game, where you complete jigsaw puzzles to create compelling artwork, it is revealed that the plot and the characters have more depth to them than is typical of a puzzle platformer. In Braid the player has to discover the story, there is very little interaction with the character or indication as to why the need to rescue the princess. By doing this the player is rewarded with a rich story the further they get into the game. It also features a great twist ending…

Where it came from

Jonathan Blow came up with the concept of Braid in 2004. His intention seemed to be to give the side-scroller platformer (like Super Mario Bros.) more depth by exploring different types of game play and new concepts of narrative.

Where it went next

Braid has been well received and is widely heralded for its unique puzzles, stunning artwork and compelling plot.
